A Program of Music Excellence (Year 7 - 9)

Program Vision

Research shows that learning Music can help students:

  • Improve reasoning capacity and problem solving skills
  • Improve Math and Language performance
  • Develop memory
  • Develop greater social and team skills
  • Assist disadvantaged children
  • Develop creativity

Research shows that there is a profound connection between music and academic excellence. The benefits of taking part in a specialised music program cannot be     underestimated.

Keebra Park has had great success over the last 16 years in OP Music and Music Extension. Our Instrumental Music Program has also been very successful. This includes accelerated pathways in both Concert Band and String Ensemble for primary school students and we also have an award-winning Vocal Group.

Classroom and extra-curricular music go hand in hand to allow students to reach their potential. This has been proven over and over again with enhanced student outcomes. Year 7-9 Music Excellence is offered to better prepare for Senior Music. Classroom work is complemented by involvement in the school performing ensembles, leading to heightened outcomes for participating students.

Curriculum

High achieving students in Music from   Year 6 who are successful entrants into the program via audition will be placed in the Music Academy class. These classes will pursue an extended advanced music curriculum which includes:

  • Master classes and workshops with industry professionals
  • Excursions to live performances and music studios
  • Extension classes in Performance, Composition and Musicology
  • Representing the school in showcases, eisteddfods and public performances
  • Participation in major school events such as the Performing Arts Showcase, Awards Night, Anzac Assemblies
  • Working on outcomes beyond the age level with greater depth and complexity.

Partnerships

Over the last 8 years, we have forged a close relationship with Griffith University and the Conservatorium of Music, with students completing University subjects whilst still in Year 12. Last year, three Year 12 students completed a subject in the Bachelor of Popular Music Course at Griffith University as part of the Guests Program. These students studied OP Music, Music Extension and Music in Practice at Keebra.

Our Junior Secondary Music Excellence students participate in the Mini Rock School run by Griffith University. Involvement in these courses has led to students continuing on to complete their degrees in music at various universities.

Students who excel in music, though do not wish to pursue a musical career, find that their OP scores are greatly enhanced by excellent results in this academic subject. This effectively assists with their entry into the university course of their choice.
