High Performance Reading Program

The Year 7 and 8 Reading Program at Keebra Park State High School is well underway. Students have been busy locating the Main Idea, Recalling Facts, Understanding Sequencing and Inferring Information.  Underpinning our program is the Rigorous Reading Strategy. It has four key elements:

1.      Modelling

2.      Feedback

3.      Scaffolding

4.      Community Collaboration

Central to this strategy is our focus on Text Dependent Questions. These reader centred questions allow for students to make meaning and engage with the text on a deeper level. There are six steps to consider when engaging with Text Dependent Questions:

1.      Step One:  What is the big picture?

2.      Step Two:  What is the general understanding of the text?

3.      Step Three:  What are the unfamiliar words or phrases?

4.      Step Four:  What are the key details in the text?

5.      Step Five:  What is the Author’s Purpose?

6.      Step Six:  Inference and Opinions Whose voice is not represented in the text?

This program is currently being offered to all students in Years 7 and 8.
