What
is the Keebra Park ESL unit?
Keebra
Park S.H.S. is a state school with an ESL
unit which provides English language and other
services to immigrant students living in the
Gold Coast area.
The
aim of the ESL unit is to integrate the immigrant
students into all areas of the curriculum
as quickly as possible.
Who
are the students?
Secondary
school aged students who are permanent residents
and most temporary residents of Australia.
Students' ages range from 12 to 20. Students
whose main language is not English. Students
who have difficulties in high school due to
a limited level of English proficiency. Older
students who have completed their education
but do not have enough English for tertiary
entrance. In 2009 ESL students make up 13%
of the population.
ESL eligibility: All students on
a permanent and dependant visas as well as
those on most temporary visas are eligible.
Students on student and visitor visas need
to contact Queensland Education International
(EQI) as fees are payable on these visas.
How
long do students stay at Keebra Park S.H.S.
ESL unit?
Students
stay at Keebra Park S.H.S. from one to five years. Some move
to other high schools nearer their homes when
their English language skills have reached
a level where they can cope with minimal help.
